Michael Fadugbagbe is an American-born Yoruba-Nigerian artist & filmmaker raised in Jamaica, Queens and based in Brooklyn, New York.
As a practitioner, researcher, and educator, he works in photography, video art, installation, and writing addressing themes of memory, power, and movement through a poetic/critical lens. His work draws from the de/anti-colonial words of Fanon, sounds of Fela Kuti, still images of Gordon Parks, and moving images of Sembène.
Commercially, he’s done strategic work for HBO, Netflix, and New York Times, bridging artful & precise storytelling with diligent research, cultural resonance, and subversion.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with High Honors in Studio Art from Wesleyan University, where his installation “e be so!” (2025) & “bloody august” (2025) photo-series were unanimously awarded the Jessup Prize, the university’s highest distinction in the arts, as the first African male recipient in the institution’s history. He has completed residencies internationally and domestically at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Nigeria; Bailey College of Environment, Middletown, CT & BLAC, New York, NY.
He is currently completing post-production for his narrative short film debut, “WATERBOY” and new photo-series “EXPATRIATES.”
